So back in March this year we found out that the new Australian Standards for Solar Installs would be bought into South Australia, well it looks like they are set to arrive at the end of this month, November 2017.
What does this mean for the people who are looking to install solar in South Australia now. Ok, so currently you are able to install up to a 10kW (10,000 watts) solar system if you have a single phase electricity supply at your house and if you have a 3 phase electricity supply you can have up to 30kW or 10kW per phase, this is all about to change.
So what does this mean for you the potential solar customer. The new rules will mean if you have a single phase electricity supply at your house you will be limited to a 5kW or 5000 watt inverter, currently we can put 6.5kW of panels on 5kW inverter, we are unsure if we will still be able to put 6.5kW of panels onto a 5kW inverter. We called SAPN yesterday and got two different answers from two different people about this, so it is still an unknown. What we DO know is we wont be able to put a 6kw OR 8Kw inverter onto your house if you have single phase.
If you have three phase power you will now be limited to 5kW per phase or 15kW in total and there is a new stipulation that the phases must be equal so you cant have 5kW on 1 of your 3 phases and 2 on another phase and 1 on another, you must keep the phases equal so we could have 4kW on each phase for a total of 12kW.
In summery, hurry up and order your solar system if you have a single phase connection and you want more than 5000 watts of panels. Likewise those commercial folks who have a 3 phase supply and have been considering a 30kW system should get in and order there system now. In the past when changes have been made to the solar rules they have given 120 days for those who already had their solar approvals done to get installed and we think this will most probably be the case this time too, but we cant be sure of that.
